Leona A. Cash of New York City and Washingtonville succumbed to a long illness on February 9, 2019 at United Hospice of Rockland in New City, NY. She was 86.
Leona was born on April 15, 1932 in Waynesboro, Virginia to John Franklin Dorcus and Janie Anne Empy Dorcus. She accepted Christ at an early age, received her education in the public school system in Covington, Virginia, and met her soul mate, Lewis Cash (of neighboring Clifton Forge, Virginia) in 1947. The couple later moved to New York City where they united in marriage and became long-time residents. She began working in the Garment District in New York, and later in Food Service at Martin Luther King Jr. High School where she stayed for 22 years until her retirement in 1997.
Leona was a strong and courageous woman who loved her family dearly. She was always there when anyone needed. Her laughter and loving spirit will forever be remembered.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, Lewis Cash, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Mercedes Cash (Washingtonville, NY); loving grandchildren, Tamisha Williams, Tanisha Cash and Lewis Cash, III; brothers, Billy Dorcus and Nathaniel Dorcus; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends, including Thelma Singleton, Abeena Maanu (her long-time Home Health Aide), Joey Polk and “AJ” Roberts (who called her “Grandma” as well), all of whom took excellent care of her when she was unable to do it for herself.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm with a Funeral Service immediately following at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY 10924.
Leona didn’t favor any one particular charity. The family asks for memorial contributions in her name to be made to United Hospice of Rockland c/o Joe Raso Hospice Residence, 415 Buena Vista Rd, New City, NY 10956.
