Esther Hodge Lewis, known affectionately to friends as the Lady of the Lake, died following a long illness surrounded by her loving family at her home in Godeffroy. She was 100.
The daughter of the late James and Alice Baxter Hodge, she was born on March 18, 1917 in Wingdale, NY. Esther worked as a credit manager for Horton Hospital for 35 years. She married Theodore Mills Lewis, who predeceased her in 1990. She has lived the last 20+ years at Lake Guymard, which is how she became known as the Lady of the Lake. She loved to share her days at the lake with her friends and family. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life, she was always there for her son, family and friends. Esther loved people. She was a caretaker for several of her friends and her daughter-in-law, Paula, during their illnesses.
She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, along with Ben Gilman, Esther founded the first Republican Club in Orange County. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.
Esther is survived by her son, Ted Lewis of Godeffroy; her grandchildren, Ted III, Charles, Michael, and Charla; and great-grandchildren, C.J., Christopher, Victoria, John Henry, Sam and Madison, great-great grandchildren, Jace, Emellia, and Charles Alexander.
She was predeceased by her son, Charles, sister, Martha Southworth, brother Charles Hodge and daughter-in-law Paula Lewis.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Esther’s name may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
