Michael Jude Garay, owner and operator of Modern Milling Feed and Supply Co in Bullville, NY, died following a short illness on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 78.
The son of the late Julius and Catherine Haran Garay, he was born on February 26, 1938 in the Bronx. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1960-1963. He married Maryanne McGovern and they shared 55 years of marriage together. He was a regular commincant at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Middletown.
Michael was extremely active in his community over the years; he was a volunteer fireman and past Chief in Bullville since 1982 and served as chief in the early 90s. He was a member of the Hudson Valley Fireman Association , Fire Cheifs Association of Orange County, FASNY and the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was a member and past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 4. Michael was the 2009 Irish American of the Year and served on the Irish Heritage Festival Committee. He loved travelling to Ireland and had great memories shared with hs friends and family there. Michael had a fantastic sense of humorand lived life to the fullest with his loving wife, Maryanne.
He also loved his basset hounds and otter hounds and those relationships brought him to be a member of the Patroon Bassett Hound Club, Bassett Hound Club of America and the Otterhound Club as well a member and past President of the Wallkill Kennel Club. He showed 9 dogs to their chanpionships
Michael was a classic car collector who was a member of the Saturday Night Crusisers in his ‘56 Chevy, his 50th birthday present from his wife which he enjoyed for nearly 30 years.
In addition to his wife Maryanne at home, Michael is survived by his brother, Daniel and his wife, Diana of Lake George, NY and his many nieces and nephews, Peggy, Colleen, Janine, Danny Jr, James, Sean, Patrick, James, Kathryn and Erin and six greatnieces and seven great nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 70 Carmelite Drive, Middletown, NY. Fr. James Hess, O. Carm will officate. Burial wil follow in the family plot in Gate of Heaven in Vallhalla, NY.
Memorial contributions in Michael’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis, TN 31085.
