Hugh John O’Connor, son of the late Hugh and Elizabeth McManus O’Connor, died following a long illness on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was 69.
He was born on September 4, 1943, in Bronx, New York, where he graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1961. He went on to receive his BBA from Manhattan College in 1965, where he enlisted in the ROTC. Hugh then proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965-70 in locations spanning from Colorado and San Antonio to Japan. He continued his pursuit of education throughout his lifetime, attending Trinity University and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX where he received an MBA and an MHA, respectively. He was also active in the Manhattan College Alumni Association for many years. Hugh worked in finance for several hospitals in the New York area including St. Anthony’s Hospital, Butterfield Hospital, St. Luke’s and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
Hugh was a kind, generous, thoughtful brother and father; he loved many sports, including tennis, golf and skiing, and was a passionate connoisseur of a wide variety of music. His hobbies over the years included slide photography, record collecting, home audio recording and electronics. Hugh had an admirable, resolute will to live his life to the fullest; he was, additionally, a very talented whistler.
He is survived by his two sons, Hugh of Tampa, FL, and Matthew of Brooklyn, NY, and one daughter, Bridget of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his wife, Pamela; one brother, Thomas of High Point, NC; and two sisters, Noreen Mooney of Bainbridge, NY, and Catherine O’Connor-Prior of Ridgefield, CT; as well as several nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Visitation will be held from 8 am to 9:45 am on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown. Burial with Military honors will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Calvary Hospital.
