WINSTON H. GANDY

October 14, 1940 - October 25, 2011

Middletown, NY

On Tuesday, October 25, 2011, surrounded and comforted by his family, Winston Harold Gandy passed at Orange Regional Medical Center after a long illness. Winston was a long-time resident of Middletown, NY. He was born in Philadelphia, PA October 14, 1930, to Louise and Roland Gandy. He grew up in the nearby suburbs with seven brothers and sisters. Winston graduated from Lincoln University where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He was drafted to the Army post-grad and assigned to special services. He played football, baseball and traveled through Europe. When he returned to the United States he earned an MA from New York University and later his Education Administration certification from SUNY New Paltz. Winston worked as an Educational Supervisor for several NYS prisons. He last worked at the Otisville Correctional facility. Winston married Ernestine Holmes on August 15, 1959. 

Winston was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the American Legion Post #151. He was an avid fan of the Yankees, Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. His family will remember him as an excellent father with strong values who helped shape the community around him. 

Winston is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ernestine (Tina) Holmes. They were both members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, Winston is survived by his son, Dr. Winston Gandy Jr. and his wife, Michele of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Kimberly Gandy of Maryland; brothers, William (Bill) and his wife, Shirley Gandy of Oakland, CA, and Frank Gandy of Palm Springs, CA; two sisters, Hortense and her husband, Flemming Carstensen of Hawaii and Thelma (Dot) Robinson of Orlando, FL. 

Winston is also survived by three special grandchildren: Winston Gandy III, Winshanai, and Winbriel Gandy. 

Visitation will be held Friday, October 28, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 29. Burial with military honors will follow in Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery, 111 Craigville Rd, Goshen, NY 10924.
