William (Bill) Irwin of Slate Hill passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was 84.
The son of John and Mary Irwin, he was born on February 5, 1927 in Manhattan. He married Theresa D. Jackson in Mount Vernon, NY on June 2, 1946. Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the LST 776 as a Gunners Mate Third Class. He received several service medals for the battle of Iwo Jima and Okanowa. After his honorable discharge, he was a firefighter with the City of Mt. Vernon for 35 years. Bill says, "Fly the Flag".
In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Delphine (Dell), he is survived by his four children, Katherine Fiorenza and her husband Giulio of Yonkers, Patricia McMahon and her husband Daniel of Scarsdale, William M. Irwin, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Rye Brook, and Michael Irwin of Slate Hill; grandchildren, John, Kelly, Eileen, Mary Kay, William III, Kimberly and Briana; and his great-grandchildren, Ashley, Danny, Ariel, Alexander, Nicholas and Ava. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Monday, May 23, 2011 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at his church, Holy Cross R.C. Church at 11 am on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 on South Centerville Rd, South Centerville, NY. Rev. Robert Porpora will officiate. Burial with Military honors will follow at Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY, 10924. In lieu of flowers, Memorial masses in William's name would be preferred by his family. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
