Obituary for William D Schraer
Dr. William D. Schraer, 89, long time biology teacher and science supervisor for the Enlarged City School District of Middletown NY, passed away on July 6, 2022. He was the husband of the late Beverley S. (Willis) Schraer.
He was born to Harry and Fanny (Gaylor) Schraer of Fall River, MA on January 29, 1933.
During his adolescence, William was an active member of the Sea Scouts and after graduating from Durfee High School in 1951, he served on the USS Snyder during the Korean War at the rank of Quartermaster Seaman.
William earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Boston University, and a master’s degree in Education from SUNY New Paltz. Later, during a sabbatical from the Middletown Schools, he obtained his PhD in Biology from the University of Utah. In addition to sharing his love of science with countless students during his 35-year teaching career in Middletown, he also
initiated the Syracuse University Project Advance in Biology course and co-authored a series of nationally recognized high school biology textbooks published by Prentice-Hall. Upon retiring from Middletown, William spent the next 20 years serving as a university supervisor for SUNY New Paltz mentoring future teachers pursuing New York State science
teacher certification.
While at Boston University, William met and married the love of his life, Beverley, in 1961.
Together they embarked on a lifelong journey that included, travel out West and abroad, and many friends and family.
William is survived by his daughter Lyn E. Schraer-Joiner, son-in-law David of New Providence,
NJ, granddaughter, Jennifer Catherine, his niece, Sarah Marino, her husband Ron, and their
sons Mark and Ross of Dighton, Massachusetts.

There will be a celebration of William’s life at the Applebee McPhillips Funeral Home located at 130 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY 10940 on Thursday, July 14th at 12pm with a visitation beginning at 10am. William will be laid to rest beside Beverley at the Howells Cemetery following the service.
