Obituary for William C. Novak, Jr.
WILLIAM C. NOVAK

May 6, 1944 - March18, 2014

Mt. Hope, NY

William C. Novak, Jr., hero, father, and former Town of Mt. Hope Supervisor, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at his home in Mount Hope. He was 69.

The son of the late Elna V. Petersen and William C. Novak, Sr, he was born on May 6, 1944 in Middletown. Bill grew up in Middletown and graduated from Middletown High School in 1962 and graduated from college with a Nursing Degree. Bill proudly served in the Air Force for eight years, including service during the Vietnam War as an Air Rescue Paramedic. He was also stationed at Aviano Air Force Base, in Italy, where he played professional baseball for Moretti's. He received the rank of Staff Sargeant during his military career. He was retired from the military in 1973 because of the injuries received during his service.

After he was discharged from the Air Force, Bill worked as a registered nurse. He was a member of many civic organizations including the Polish Legion, Lions, VFW, Elks BPOE #1097, and was a honorary member of Mt. Hope Fire Co., and the American Legion. He coached Otisville Little League, Minisink Youth Soccer, and was active with his son William's Boy Scout troop. Bill was a former State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans and head of its National Commanders and Adjutants Association. He was a charter member of DAV Chapter 212 and member of the DAV Auxiliary. He was a proud recipient of the Middletown JayCee's Citizen of the Year Award. Bill was also the first director of People for People. Bill was a lifetime parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Middletown. He was a Republican Party Committee member and very politically active. Bill became the Supervisor for Town of Mt. Hope and served the community for over 20 years.

He spent his life in service, beginning with the Military as a medic and retiring last year as a Supervisor for his town. He was always inspired to help others in all of his endeavors. He was personable, down to earth, tolerant, humble, helpful and always available to give someone a hand. He held true to his convictions and was a hardworker. He was a serious Yankee fan his entire life. Of his many accomplishments, the ones he was most proud of were his two children. By example, Bill taught his children the importance of finding the good in and doing good for others, to be generous, selfless, and kind, and to love one another. He always told them not to sweat the small stuff. Bill will be dearly missed by his family and friends who were looking forward to sharing time during his retirement with him.

Bill is survived by his children: one son, William of Albany and his daughter, Jeannine of Atlanta, GA; two brothers: Edward Novak and his wife, Sally of Middletown and Michael Wisowaty of Yonkers; two sisters: Theresa Grabowski and her husband, Raymond of Middletown and Michelle Switaj and husband, Dennis of Hoboken, NJ; two granddogs: Mattingly and O’Neill; a grandcat, Jack and 12 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and one sister, Mary Ann Morales.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Ave., Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 27th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel; Fr. John Horan, O.Carm. will officiate.
