Our beloved dad, Walter C. Welch Sr. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday ,July 15, 2023. He was 97 years old.
Walt was born in Middletown, N.Y. on September 27, 1925 to Margaret M. Doran and Clarence E. Welch. He was their fourth child.
Walter graduated from Middletown High School. He was a WWII veteran serving on the USS Missouri and then in Cuba as a De-Coder.
He Married the love of his life , Shirley Nichols, on June 21, 1947 and together they raised three children.
Walter retired from Lloyds Super Center as a butcher and continued to work at the Historic, Hillside Cemetery to care for the grounds until his retirement at the age of 94. Always athletic,.he played in the Middletown Softball League in his younger years and played in a Horseshoe League in Circleville well into his 90’s .He was a lifetime member of the McQuoids Engine and Ladder Company .An avid sportsman, he was a lifetime member of the BlackBrook Rod and Gun Club and loved hunting and fishing.
Walter is survived by his children; Bonnie Masci, Walter Welch, Jr. and his wife, Susan, Timothy Welch and his wife, Pamela and his grandchildren ;Louis A. Masci and his fiancé, Jessica, Jeffrey Masci and his wife Lauren, Suzanne McMonagle and her husband Daniel, Aaron Welch and his wife Jackie, Megan Vobroucek and her husband, Chad and Timothy Welch and his wife, Kait as well as fifteen great -grandchildren ; Sarah. Andrew ,Kiera, Jillian ,Walter, Kaylee, Keagan, Kenzie, Kerryn, Calvin ,Olivia, Rory, Landon, Teagan and Maeve. He is also survived by his nieces; Gail and Kathy, nephew, Richard and his devoted friend, Michael McCann. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Ave, Middletown, N.Y. at 11 am with Fr. Paul Richmond. O.Carm. officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hillside Cemetery with Military Honors.
