Thomas Smith of Middletown, died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 23, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 83 years old. He was born in New York City to the late Peter and Bridget Della Brady Smith on June 18, 1929.Â
Tom can be described as the best husband, dad and grandparent ever. His essence was to be of service to others. He loved his work as a pharmacist and started his career locally in Lloyd’s. He eventually bought the oldest pharmacy in Newton, NJ, (Hendershots) and ran it for over 30 years. Tom has been a pharmacist at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Warwick until his death. He was all about family and even his coworkers considered themselves part of his clan, and he was devoted to all of them. Once in a while, he’d enjoy bowling and fishing but for the most part, work was his playground. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the amazing angels, called nurses, in the ICU at ORMC and Tom and Liz Schwartz for bringing Unchained Melody to his bedside.Â
Thomas is survived by his devoted wife, Louise; loving daughters: Shannon Brock and her husband, Robert of Middletown, April Smith of Baltimore, MD, Kerry Campbell and her husband, Wes of Eclectic, AL, Candy Smith of El Ceritto, CA, Penny Jehlen of Palm Harbor, FL, Colleen Gibbons and her husband, Mike of Troy, AL; loving daughter–in-law, Ellen Smith of New Hampton; his brother, Fr. Stephen Smith, O.P. He took great delight in his grandchildren: Cory, Erin, Colin, Tommy, Matthew, Taira, Ryon, Michael, Jessica, and Kacie; great-granddaughter, Layla and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Michael in 2012 and brothers: Peter and Andrew.Â
Memorial contributions may be made in Thomas’ name to American Heart Assoc., 419 East Main St., Middletown, NY 10940. Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, January 27, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 28 at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church. Burial will take place in the family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.Â
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, January 27, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940.
