Thomas A. D'AmbrosioMay 18, 1956-February 4, 2021Middletown, NYThomas “Big Tom” D'Ambrosio, a longtime Middletown resident, died unexpectedly on February 4, 2021. He was 64.
The son of the late Carmine and Josephine Fantauzza D'Ambrosio, was born on May 18, 1956, in Queens, NY. Tom grew up in Brooklyn and Queens. He began working for the New York City Department of Sanitation as an officer in 1979. He was promoted to Supervisor in 1987 and served Manhattan until he retired in 2009. Tom was a friend of Bill W. for 31 years and always took the opportunity to be of service to others. He provided support, a ride, a joke, a song, an ear, a shoulder, guidance, help, suggestions, and the truth (whether you wanted it or not) to anyone he encountered. It was good to have Tom on your side, as he was a fighter and a true friend. He loved his friends and would go to any lengths for them all but held a special place in his heart for his children and grandchildren.
Tom attended every event, big or small. He did everything in his power to be at baseball games, track meets, school functions, music and dance performances, and graduations. He never missed vacations, outings to zoos, fairs, theme parks, hiking trips, and beaches. Even the monotonous things were important to him like doctors’ appointments, grocery shopping, and haircuts. He would drop everything, at any time to help the most important people in his life. It did not matter where they were, he would go out of his way to see them even if it was only for a few minutes. When he wasn’t helping others and with his family, he was tending to his indoor and outdoor gardens, cooking, creating art, wood crafting, all the while immersed in music of all kinds. Tom had admiration and appreciation for athletes. He loved every sport, but football, baseball, and tennis were his favorites. Tom was a loyal Giants and Mets fan and despised the Cowboys and the Yankees. Exercise was a huge part of Tom’s life. He made it a priority to work out every day. Dolson Avenue will never be the same without Tom, his orange sweatshirt, and his walking sticks.
He leaves behind his children; daughter Mara Mayfield and her husband Josh, son Thomas D’Ambrosio and daughter Rose D'Ambrosio. He will be forever loved and remembered by his cherished grandsons, Logan Mayfield, Damien Mayfield, and Demetrius Mayfield. He is also survived by his sister, Josephine Burns and her husband Brian, his niece Amanda Burbey and her husband Ryan and nephew Tyler Burns and his wife Allison, great-niece Dahlia Burbey, ex-wife/friend Margierose (Joann) Salerno, and a countless number of family, friends, and neighbors.
**Viewing will be from 6 to 8 pm Friday, February 12, 2021 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Cremation will be private.
Memorial Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at Tom's house at 33 Bennett Street, Middletown, NY 10940. As per his wishes, come in the back door, grab a cup of coffee, enjoy the music, and go out the front. Memorial contributions in Tom’s name may be made to his family to offset funeral costs. As per NYS Covid 19 restrictions, facial coverings and social distancing will be expected at the service.
