Sylvia Vitro, cherished mother, sister and grandmother, died on Saturday, November 5, 2016 following a courageous battle with cancer at O.R.M.C. She was 73.
The youngest of five children born to the late Savino and Rosa Savino Manna, she was born on February 7, 1943 in Ripacandida, Italy. Sylvia married Robert Vitro on June 25, 1966 in Mount Vernon and they shared 26 years together before his death in 1992. Sylvia loved life, flowers and people. Her family called her the “Ambassador” because of her sweet friendly manner. She had many “favorite people” and treasured children and their innocence. She was a superb cook and delighted her family with her talents in the kitchen. She celebrated holidays, and especially Italian Christmas Eve(Ovento).
Sylvia is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Maria of Middletown, and her daughter Deborah Eberhardt and her husband Chris of Chester; brothers, Michael Manna and his wife Nadia , and Danny Manna and his wife Donna; sister, Lucy Nardone of Harriman; and her beloved grandchildren, Anthony, Lauren, Jamie, Gianna, and Hailey and niece Sandra Bickerstaff and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Sylvia is predeceased by her daughter Johanna on December 17, 1976 and sister Isabella Newman as well as a brother-in-law Robert Nardone in 1992.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9:30 pm on Monday, November 7, 2016 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. www.applebee-mcphillips.com
