Obituary for Susie Martin
Susie M. Martin, passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2021. She was 93 years old.
The daughter of the late Frank and Ida Judkins Mitchell, she was born on November 12, 2021 in Waugh, Alabama. She soon after moved to Montgomery, Alabama where she attended Montgomery County School. After school, she met the love her life the late Prince Martin, whom she married and together had one daughter, Ida.
Eventually Susie and her family moved to New York. She was a proud member of The Greater Zion Church in Brooklyn, NY, where she became well known for spending most of her time serving as a nurse at the church for many years, helping her fellow members and friends. Susie also worked as a Nurse’s Aide in Scarsdale for a number of years, she loved working with her colleagues and patients, and was loved by all in return.
Holidays were Susie’s favorite time of year. She loved to cook and bake; her family’s favorites were her delicious sweet potato pie and amazing coconut cake.
She was the most loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, to her family and friends. They will miss her warm smile and hearing her hum her favorite tunes that was always a comfort to them. She earned the nickname “Mama Susie” and it will be the name she will be recalled by, in her memory, forever.
She is survived by her daughter, Ida Mitchell, and sister, Celestine. Grandchildren; Dawn, Susan, and Ronald. Great-grandchildren; Brandon, Monique, Synae, Joseph, and Prince. Great great-grandchildren, Skylar and Mulan “Cookie”, and a host of family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Prince Martin, brothers, Sylvester, Frank, and Homer Mitchell, grandson Duane DeVega, and great-granddaughter Shanice DeVega.
In memory of Mama Susie, the family wanted to include her favorite bible verse:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
