Middletown, NY 

Stephen Mark Brown, former longtime resident of Middletown, NY and retired Professional Firefighter for the City of Middletown passed away in Glens Falls on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the age of 62. 

Steve was born and raised in Middletown. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1969 and went on to earn an Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology from Orange County Community College. He proudly served his country in the US Army for 2 years in Europe from 1970-1972. He worked as a Professional Firefighter for the City of Middletown for 30 years and for the Middletown School district as the Transportation Liaison for over a decade. After retiring he worked part time in both Middletown and Glens Falls as a security guard. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. 

Steve enjoyed cooking and watching the Mets. He began his career working for the Times Herald Record. He spent the majority of his career as a paid professional driving for the Phoenix Engine Company. He was a 44 year member of the Ontario Hose company and received the honors of Fireman of the Year as well as a two time recipient of Ontario of the Year. For two years he served as president of the Professional Firefighter's Union Local 1027, and 10 years as their secretary/treasurer. He was also a member of the Veteran Firefighter's Association. He was a 35 year member of the Pocatello Volunteer Fire Department. For many years he enjoyed catchering for the Ontario Hose Company in their fast pitch softball league, as well as bowling in the Tuesday night fireman's league. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Middletown Little League, as well as being a past member of the Truman Moon PTO. 

Steve is survived by his daughter Lindsey Veety and her husband Ryan of Sparrowbush; his son Christian Brown and his wife Sarah of Port Jervis; their mother Justine Brown of Middletown; his father Walter Brown of Chandler, AZ; his sister Susan Jernigan and her husband Terry of Chandler, AZ; his late brother Walter's wife Marieva Ortiz Brown of Durango Mexico; grandchildren Hannah and Jackson Veety of Sparrowbush; and multiple nieces, nephews, and friends. 

The family would like to give a special thank you to all of the physicians and nurses who took care of our dad at Glens Falls Hospital, Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and The Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and his close friend Debbie Funicello. 

The visitation will be held at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY 10940 on Thursday from 5-7pm. Funeral services will immediately follow. Burial of ashes will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
