SOPHIA M. SCHOONMAKER
April 2, 1930 - April 1, 2018
Westtown, NY
On Easter morning, Sophia M. Schoonmaker, a retired bookkeeper for Agway Energy Products, died after a short illness in her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was a day shy of 88 years.
The youngest child born to John and Kunegunda Olewski Cieselwicz, she was born on April 2, 1930 in Bullville, New York on the Family Farm.
She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1948. She married George F. Schoonmaker on November 21, 1948. After He died in 1991, Sophia joined several Senior Clubs, including The Slate Hill Pacers, Greenville and Unionville Seniors. She was a devoted member of the Unionville Presbyterian Church, and spent Tuesday mornings with her Bible Study Group, often bringing her famous apple pie or crisp to share with others. Sophia helped at the Crop Walk each year manning a Water Stop in front of the YMCA. She was one of seven children and spent her life helping others. She was a born-again believer and a family-oriented wife, mom and grandparent.
She is survived by and missed by her children: Christopher “Maybrook” and his wife, Wendy in Idaho, Rosalie Cox of Middletown, Nancy Weymer and her husband, Steven in Westtown, Linda Lanfear and her companion, Alan Kordecki of Middletown; and brother, Stephen Cieselwicz of Warwick; sister, Anna Dibble of Hancock, NY; five grandchildren: Robert (Jodi), Sara, Bryant (Rosella), Marc (Kendell), Andrew and his fiancee, Laura; step grand-children: Michelle, Heather and Shannon; and five great grandchildren: Nicolas, Mackayla, Ava, Aiden, Jace and Hunter; as well as five step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband; brothers, John, Theodore and Joseph; sister, Lucy; and sons-in-law, Michael and Robin.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Funeral Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. at Applebee-Mcphillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, New York. Sophia’s son-in-law, Steven Weymer will officiate. Burial will follow at the family plot in Scotchtown Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family wished to express their gratitude to Dr. Dinsmore for his care of Sophia.
In lieu of flowers, it was Sophia’s wish for people to donate to St. Jude’s Hospital or Pet’s Alive in her memory.
