SHIRLEY ELIZABETH WILCOX
(October 6, 1924 – January 31, 2022)
Shirley Elizabeth Wilcox, of Middletown NY, passed away at Middletown Park Rehabilitation & Healthcare on Monday, January 31, 2022. She was 97 years old. The daughter of the late Roy Eherts and Edna (Broas) Eherts, Shirley was born on October 6, 1924 at home in Middletown, NY. She married the love of her life, Arthur Nelson Wilcox Sr. on February 9, 1946, at North Congregational Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher. They were blessed to have 64 years of marriage until his death in July 2010.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was also a Sunday School Teacher. She began her sewing career at Miss Swanks as a Zig Zag operator. She then became an upholstery seamstress for Lance Decorators and then also started her own business as Shirley’s Sewing Service, contracting slip cover work for Sears Roebuck & Co. She was a lifetime member of the Lumberland Senior Citizens Club, and along with her husband, helped bring that club back to life. She was a member of the RSVP of Sullivan County, a member of the Slate Hill Pacers and the Town of Wallkill Seniors. In the last 15 years of her life while living in Senior Way, she was always the one who could be counted on to plan holiday and monthly birthday parties as well as social gatherings in the community room, even if it was just to gather daily to work on puzzles or share books.
Shirley is survived by her four beloved sons: William Kenneth and his wife J. Jody of Middletown, NY, Randy and his wife Pauline of Bloomingburg, NY, Nelson and Jan of Goshen, NY, and Peter of Pine Bush, NY; her beloved 12 grandchildren: Jacqueline Wilcox of Glen Spey, NY, Dr. Amy Voigt of New Orleans, LA, Ryan Wilcox of Los Angeles, CA, Allison Chastain of Pine Bush, NY, Jessica Awadallah of Middletown, NY, Dr. Jennifer Cordes of Cincinnati, OH, Tanner Wilcox of Somerville, ME, Nicole Dolan of Modena, NY, Kayla Conero of Pine Bush, NY, Lindsay Beck of Milton, NY, Erin Goff of Ridgefield, CT and Megan Wilcox of Middletown, NY. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren: William, Abby, Crawford, Kaitlyn, Daniel, Christopher, Julia, Noah, Aubree, Caleb, Steven, Brayden, Flora and Kiley. She is also survived by her sister, Dolores Holland of Foxboro, MA as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved son, Arthur Nelson Wilcox and her four brothers: Herbert, Walter, George and Roy Eherts Jr. as well as two sisters: Nellie Bialas and Ruth Skinner.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 8th from 6-8 PM at the Applebee McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 9th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Kevin Mulqueen officiating. Interment will be at the Ridgebury Cemetery, Ridgebury, NY. Arrangements are by Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home.
