Obituary for Sheryl Salvati Carney
SHERYL ANN SLAVATI CARNEY
February 11, 1938 - July 23, 2018
Middletown, NY

Sheryl gained her angel wings, passing away peacefully in the early morning on Monday, July 23, 2018, at Highland Rehabilitation Center, Middletown, following a lengthy illness. A lifelong area resident, she was 80 years old.
The daughter of the late Anthony Salvati and Catherine Grogan Lee, Sheryl was born on February 11, 1938, in Middletown, NY. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1955, where she was a majorette, and an artist, winning several prestigious awards for her work. The following year she graduated from the Central Academy of Beauty Culture, Newburgh, NY earning her license in Hairdressing and Cosmetology. She worked 30 years for the State of New York as a Media Specialist with Ramapo Catskill Library System, in Middletown, before retiring in 1994 to help care for her grandchildren.
Sheryl was passionate about many things, life, her family, friends, knitting, the beach, the casino, shopping, and baking cookies. She was an incredibly generous and giving person. She knitted hundreds of hats, mittens, and scarves for the homeless and supported just about every charity that asked. Her favorite place was Cape Cod, where she spent countless vacations with her family and friends, and shopping excursions to the Christmas Tree Shops.
In 2000, she relocated to Melbourne, FL.Sheryl made many friends quickly and had a very active social life. She joined two Red Hat groups, went on several Senior trips, especially the gambling ships, and never let any grass grow under her feet. She also became very knowledgeable about hurricanes and alligators.
Sheryl was a fiercely independent, energetic, and strong woman. She had a pancreatic disorder for many years, COPD, and was a Breast Cancer survivor; however, you would never have heard a complaint from her. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Kelly Mead and her husband Guy, of Monticello, and Kerry Mansueto and her husband Rocco of Bloomingburg; brothers, Kevin Salvati, Tracy Lee and Barry Lee; grandchildren, Ernest DeGastonguay and his wife Kari, Guy Mead, Jr, Sarah Hinkley and her husband Josh, Kayla Mead, Marisa Mansueto, Anthony Mansueto, Alexander Mansueto, and Morgan Mansueto; 7 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Linda Salvati, her Aunt Letitia Degraw, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Sheryl was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Dennis and Joseph Salvati and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Mead.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and aides at Orange Regional Medical Center, and Highland Rehabilitation Center for her care in her final months. Special thanks go to Drs. Liby Mathew, Douglas Fletcher and the many Crystal Run Cardiologists who cared for and checked on her.
Please join the family, wearing bright colors, for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Peter John Madori. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
