Obituary for Sheila Frances Roesch
SHEILA FRANCES (O’BRIEN) ROESCH
November 4, 1934- January 20, 2018
Middletown, NY
Sheila Frances (O’Brien) Roesch died peacefully on January 20, 2018 at Glen Arden in Goshen, New York. She was 83. Born in Albany, New York on November 4, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Eleanor M. (Ovies) O’Brien. She was a member of the Academy of the Holy Names Class of 1950 and a 1954 graduate of Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, Purchase, New York. A fond memory of her Manhattanville classmates was the giant birthday cake sent to campus each November 4 by her father “Obie”. Sheila was an outstanding scholar and received numerous awards and honors upon her graduations from high school and college. She earned a graduate degree in the Classics from Wheelock College, Boston, MA in 1955 and was a beloved kindergarten and first grade teacher in the Albany public schools in the late 1950s.
Following a chance meeting on a blind date, Sheila met her future husband, George F. Roesch III, who was then a student at Albany Law School. They married at St. Vincent dePaul in Albany and settled in Middletown, New York to raise a family. Long active in civic affairs and the sports and activities of her children, Sheila was a vital presence in the Middletown and Goshen communities for many years. She was active in the Middletown Junior League, the Middletown Day Nursery, the Horton Hospital Auxiliary Committee, the John S. Burke Parents Athletic Association, Meals on Wheels, People to People and The Community Hospice. A true Irish beauty, she could be often heard on RadioVision reading to the blind in her sweet, soothing voice.
Sheila is survived by her loving children, Ellen S. Roesch of Albany; Anne E. (Jeremy) Dunitz, of Middletown; Matthew J. (Daria) Roesch of Rochester; and Carol F. Roesch (Phil Aiken) of Sharon, MA. She is also survived by her ten adored grandchildren, Lucy Roesch, Shayna and Jesse Dunitz, Courtney, Kyle and Kayla Butler, Amanda, Gretchen and Emily Roesch, and Graham Aiken. Sheila was predeceased by her husband in 2006 and her beloved daughter Susan in 2014. She was also predeceased by her brother, Frank E. O’Brien Jr., sisters, Mary H. O’Brien and Patricia M. Hoey, and two nephews. Several nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters- in- law survive.

She will be lovingly and forever remembered by her children with fond memories of summers spent at their cottage on Wanaksink Lake, her love of the New York Times crossword puzzle, the joys of Broadway theater, her Irish humor, and her love and devotion to them and their children. We will always love you Mom and you will live on with us in our hearts forever.
