Middletown, NY

Selwyn Shelby, a long time resident of Middletown, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at St Teresa's Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old.

Selwyn was born in Brooklyn on September 1, 1930 to the late Edward and Jessie Tepfer Shelby. He was patriotic and dedicated to his country, serving 16 years in the army. While stationed in Japan for 4 years he met and fell in love with Fukue Ichikana and they married in 1951.Selwyn was a determined man who did whatever was needed to care for his family. He was creative, feisty and always knew what he wanted. His family will always cherish the memories of the life they shared with him.

He is survived by the love of his life, Fukue "Frankie" Shelby, at home, four daughters Edith Venturini and her husband Clifford of Brooklyn, Annie Connolly and her husband Martin of Brooklyn, Denise Isseks and her husband Fred of Middletown, and Susan Massaro and her husband Keith of Blooming Grove. He is also survived by his brother William and his wife Roberta of Rochester and five grandchildren Andrew, Jessica, Jamie, Nicholas, Sadie and great granddaughter Francesca. Selwyn was predeceased by his sister Edyth.

Visitation is today, Tuesday, December 1, from 10 to 11 AM at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, NY 10940.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 am at the funeral home, Rabbi Goldberg will officiate. Burial will follow at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen, NY.
