Obituary for Samuel E. Mitchell
Samuel E. Mitchell of Slate Hill, former owner of Mitchell's Groceries in Middletown, a lifelong resident of the area died Friday, June 9, 2006 at home with his loving family by his side. He was 78 years old.The son of the late Clarence and Clara D. Hunt Mitchell, he was born September 14, 1927 in Newark, N.J. A veteran of WWII, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a charter member, life member, and past president, as well as past chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Washington Heights Fire Company. He was formerly a member of the Washington Heights school board, past Chairman of the Town of Wallkill Democratic Committee, past president of the Town of Wallkill Democratic Club. Sam was also a well-known councilman serving on the Wallkill Town Board for fourteen years, many of which he was the only Democratic representative. More recently, Sam served as Chairman of the Town of Wawayanda Zoning Board of Appeals. He still held his drivers license and real estate license, having starting with the Curabba Agency. A family statement reads, "He took great delight in his grandchildren. He made any ordinary errand a special event for them. He, and his humorous teasings, will be missed by everyone who knew him. We will always remember his love of the outdoors (camping and fishing). He was a man who enjoyed giving back to his family and his community. Although he was very responsible, he never took life too seriously."Sam is survived by his loving wife, Eugenia (Jean) at home; twin boys Samuel E. Jr. and his wife, Linda of West Shokan, Joseph A. and his wife, Mitzi of Seymour, Tenn.; two daughters Jane Sinsabaugh and her husband, Theodore of Slate Hill, Barbara Kwiecinski and her husband, Charles of Johnson; one grandson Samuel E. Mitchell III and his wife Judy; three granddaughters Keli Faber and her husband, Anthony, Amie Quackenbush and her husband, Greg, Alyxandra Mitchell; three great-grandchildren Taylor, Emilia and Victoria; two brothers Thomas Mitchell and his wife Jean and George Hunt and his wife Carol; several nieces and nephews; as well as his loving dog, Pepper. Mitchell", 60 Prospect Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, June 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown. A Funeral Service of Remembrance will take place at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.
