Samuel C. “Sam” Pagano, Jr., a retired Elementary School Principal for Mahopac School District, died following a short illness at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 87.

The son of the late Rose and Samuel C. Pagano, Sr., he was born on March 18, 1927 in Mt. Morris, NY. Sam proudly served as a mail courier and was a marksman in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a gifted marksman all of his life, especially remarkable with a sling shot. He kept his skills honed up until recently, maintaining a target range in his own backyard.

He was a devoted educator, spending his lifetime improving the school system. He began his career as a Science teacher and later became an assistant Principal for the Elmira Junior High School. From 1958-68, he worked for the Garrison School system as District Principal Superintendent. In 1968, Sam served as Elementary School Principal for the Fulmer Road School in Mahopac. During his tenure, his focus was on creating a nurturing atmosphere for both gifted children and children with disabilities. He developed innovative cirriculum to the K-8 grade for his entire district and instituted progress evaluation to assess areas of weakness and strength in the students of the district. His school was named a Blue Ribbon School by Pres. George Bush, Sr. under his direction and his work influenced schools within the district. Through his work, other schools in his area also became Blue Ribbon Schools. Following his retirement from the Mahopac School District, he served on the Washingtonville Board of Education.
