Obituary for Rosemary Turner
Rosemary Francis Turner

July 14, 1950-March 7, 2014 Middletown, NY

Rosemary Francis Turner (Rosie), age 63, died Friday, March 7, 2014 at ORMC in Middletown, NY, due to cancer complications.

Born July 14, 1950, in her home in Norfolk, VA, she was the youngest of seven children. She is survived by three sisters and one brother; Jeane Seymour, Sondra Malbone, Carrie Lindsay-Lowerre, and Edward Turner (Archie), along with many nephews, nieces, and extended family.

In Boone, NC, she received her BA and Masters in Music from Appalachian State University, during which time she overcame a battle with Stage 4 ovarian cancer. Upon graduation, her very first year teaching music, she was named Teacher of the Year. She lived and taught in Winston-Salem, NC and Virginia Beach, VA. She took a hiatus from teaching in Miami, FL, where she both owned and managed a successful business for over ten years. But music was never far from her thoughts, as she both played and conducted the Greater Miami Symphonic Band for several years, and played in a local Jazz band. She returned to teaching at the Potomac School in McLean, VA, where she taught for nine years, and later New Hampshire before recently settling in the Pine Bush School District.

She was known both for her witty sense of humor, her rapport with her students and colleagues, and the dramatic impact she had on every music program that was lucky enough to employ her talents. She taught the littlest ones up to high school and college-level students, often quadrupling enrollment. She created jazz bands, pep bands to support athletic events, as well as gave lessons to music students of all ages.

She was cherished by her family, beloved by the community, and was considered extended family to many of the students she taught.

The family will receive friends at Applebee McPhillips, 130 Highland Avenue in Middletown, NY, on Thursday, March 13 from 5pm to 8pm, with the Memorial Service held at 7pm. The family will have a private burial at her home in Virginia, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcome and should be mailed to Hayes School of Music Cannon Music Camp, at Appalachian State University. www.cannon.appstate.edu OR to F.A.M.E. (Family Assistance for Music Education), Pine Bush High School, Attn: Brian Flint, 156 Rt. 302 Pine Bush, NY 12566.
