Robert Schoonmaker, a lifetime area resident, died on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Valley View Nursing Home and Rehabilition Center in Goshen. He was 81.
Robert (Bob) Schoonmaker grew up in a dairy farming family of 12 children in New Hampton, NY. He was a gentle man, loving husband forever devoted to his wife, Lena for 57 years, and father who worked hard all of his life to provide for his family. In his later years, he enjoyed working with his brother-in-law, at Love Lee Jewelry. His passion was gardening and will be remembered for growing beautiful roses and hibiscus flowers. He loved his dog, Cindy, animal pets and country music. He was a Christian and a member of Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. He will be sadly missed by many.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lena; and five children: Richard of Haddon Township, NJ, Rose Baglia of Westtown, Patty Ford of New Hampton, Marilyn Genter and her husband, Keith of Esopus, and Eileen Turi and her husband, Victor of Middletown; one brother, Irving; sisters, Arleen Schaffer and her husband, Harry, Mildred Simpson and Helen Sisco as well as a sister-in-law, Sophia Schoonmaker; his grandchildren: Robert, James, Christina and Tara and great-grandchildren: Christian, Blaine, Lucas, and Ciaran.
He was predeceased by his parents and brothers: William, Gene, George, and Earl (Sonny) Schoonmaker and sisters, Mary Jane Gordon and Margaret Kline.
Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Monday, February 28, 2011 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
