Robert J. McAteer, Jr, a longtime Middletown resident, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 59.
The son of Robert J. McAteer, Sr. and the late Joan Ann McAteer, Bob was born on April 30, 1954 in Brooklyn. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1974. After his military service, he moved to the Middletown area. Bob worked as a Union plumber for Mid-Orange Mechanical in Middletown. He often volunteered at the Circleville Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Elks Lodge #1097, the Howells Fire Co. and Howells Fire Police.
Bob was a dedicated husband, father and friend who had a great sense of humor. He was a quiet, but generous man, who would help anyone who needed him. He also loved fishing and dancing.Loving, caring, open, helpful, resourceful, kind, positive, selfless, easygoing, a jokester, gentle, he was a smooth fitting puzzle piece to any group or family.He was always lending a helpful hand, always playful with nieces, nephews and little kids - taking the time to make them laugh and feel just as important, or even more so, at family functions. A devoted husband, father and family man; he was never down on life, outwardly grateful to all always; a true steward of great friendship…He is survived by his loving wife, Jayna, at home; his children: Gregory McAteer of Ocee, FL, Trish McAteer of Middletown, Matthew Trifari of Queens and Andrew Trifari of Middletown; his father, Robert Sr., of Middletown; sister, Gail Blackwell and her husband, Joseph of Middletown; in-laws: Bob and Nancy DePew, Bobby and Pat DePew and Keith DePew and Sharleen Foster, all of Middletown, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Meghan Elaine Trifari on June 25, 2008 and his mother, Joan McAteer on January 1, 2012.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8th, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. An Elks Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. at Circleville Presbyterian Church, 890 Goshen Turnpike, Circleville, NY 10919 on Thursday, May 9th, Pastor Leo Jaloszynski will officiate. Cremation will be private at Cedar Hill Crematory.
