Middletown, NY
Robert Bruce Lerz, Sr., known by friends as “Big Bob” from Grant, NY and recently of Middletown, entered into rest on November 30, 2016 while under the compassionate care of professionals at Highland Rehab and Nursing Center in Middletown, NY with his son Bobby by his side. The son of the late Otto and Adele Lerz, he was born on November 5, 1937 in Great Neck, NY. He resided in Bayside, Queens and Jericho, NY. He was a career High School Teacher for 57 years, 1959-2016. After his retirement in 1992, he relocated to his “little piece of heaven”, the family home in Grant, NY. He transitioned to the SUNY system after retirement serving as a full-time substitute teacher in the Utica, NY area.He was also a union driver for the Daily News in New York City.
Bob enjoyed working with his hands, living in the country, tending to his property, and educating our youth. He especially loved the times he spent at his son’s tavern.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Carol Lerz and his youngest son Richard James Lerz, III.
Bob is survived by his oldest son, Robert (Bobby) Lerz, his granddaughter, Katherine Lerz, daughter-in-law, Irene Lerz, step-granddaughter Meghan Cunningham, and the beloved family pup, Molly. He is also survived by his identical twin brother, Richard Lerz in Washington state.
There will be a memorial service for friends and family in the spring at the Lerz family graveside in Prospect Cemetery in Prospect, NY.
Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as his disease took his youngest son’s life in 2014.
