Obituary for Robert Arthur Mansfield
Robert (Bob) Arthur Mansfield, 99, of Middletown, NY passed away peacefully at Park Manor in Middletown on September 3, 2022. He was the son of Mary Pauline nee Nohai and Arthur Edward Mansfield of Peekskill, NY.
Bob was a WWII veteran who served our country in the South Pacific as a Navy Seabee. After the war, he attended Columbia University where he graduated with a degree in pharmacy. Prior to his retirement, he worked full-time at Middletown Psychiatric Hospital and as a relief pharmacist and at numerous local pharmacies in and around Middletown.
When Bob wasn’t working, he was playing music. He played clarinet and saxophone in a multitude of local bands; concert, swing, and pit bands. He pursued this passion throughout his entire life and was active playing in three of these bands up to the age of 95.
Bob loved and embraced computers and technology. He spent many hours in retirement managing family photos, making music CDs, and corresponding with friends and family via email.
Another of Bob’s passions was languages. In particular, due to his heritage, he loved the Slovak language. He, mostly self-taught and with the help of a penpal on the Internet, was able to read, speak, and understand the language, fluently. He was truly a life-long learner and fostered a joy of learning in his daughters and granddaughters.
He always loved baseball and was an avid Mets fan. Watching the games in the nursing home gave him hours of pleasure and a means of connecting with life outside the nursing home.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Blanche nee Worden Mansfield. Blanche was a devoted spouse who did everything for Bob, so it was no small feat for him to manage without her for over sixteen years. Bob was also predeceased by his beloved daughters, Karen Ann Mansfield of Peekskill and infant daughter Shirley Ann Mansfield, and by his beloved sister Carol Jane Walker of Wappingers Falls. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Darla and Raymond Addabbo of Teaneck, NJ, Karen’s partner Terry DuTrembley of Peekskill, Terry’s son Kevin DuTrembley of Avon Lake, Ohio as well as his two adoring granddaughters, Darlayne Addabbo of Tucson, Arizona and Rayna Addabbo of St. Paul, Minnesota. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends....
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 9, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00PM at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home
