Obituary for Richard H. Broas, Jr.
Richard H. Broas, Jr., a lifetime area resident died Saturday, February 11, 2006 unexpectedly at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 54 years old.
The son of Richard H. and Marylou York Broas, Sr., Dick was born May 2, 1951 in Middletown.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
During the 1980’s, Richard served three terms as a 3rd Ward Alderman for the City of Middletown. He also was a member of the Pocatello Fire Department, The Shriners, American Legion Post 151, and the Hoffman Lodge 412.
A family statement reads, “Dick was a humble and industrious guy who grew up in Middletown and never forgot his roots. His devotion to his family, his concerns for friends and community was evident throughout his life. He had a great sense of humore, sprinkled with some dry wit and while he was small framed – he was a giant of a man when it came to things that mattered in our world. To his children, he’ll always be ‘Poppy’, and to us, he’ll always be ‘the best’.”
Besides his parents, Dick is survived by his loving wife, Mary, at home; one son Richard H. Broas III at home; five daughters Shannon Johnson and her husband Matt of Middletown, Conn., Carrie Sarbello and her husband Jeff of Middletown, Brande Hunter and her husband Sean, of Middletown, Mary and Katie at home; six grandchildren Eric, Timmy, Kiley, Mia, Sammy, and Max; one brother Ron and his wife Andi of Middletown; and one sister Luann Miedema and her husband Frank of Middletown.
He was predeceased by his sister, MaryAlyce.
Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday February 15 from 7 to 9 and again on Thursday, February 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 17 at 10 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Church,90 Euclid Avenue in Middlet0wn.
Burial will follow in the family plot at Wallkill Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
