Reverend John Canning, O.Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias, died October 6, 2009 after a long illness. He was 79 years old.
Father John was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 6, 1930 to Robert and Mary Conniff Canning. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Robert and James Canning and one sister, Kathleen O’Leary. He is survived by four sisters, Marie Henricks, Bernadette Williamson, Veronica Speiser and Theresa McHale, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Father John received his habit in the Order of Carmelites, North American Province of Saint Elias in September 1949, when he entered the Carmelite Novitiate in Auburn, New York. At the conclusion of his Novitiate year he professed First Vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity on September 8, 1950. He professed his Solemn Vows on September 12, 1953 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1955 at St. Cecelia’s Church in Englewood, New Jersey.
He graduated with a B.A. from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York in 1952. He obtained a Masters Degree in English from St. Bonaventure University in 1964. Fr. John was a teacher of Religion in Pottsville, PA from 1956-1958. He also taught English at Mt. Carmel HS in Auburn, NY (1958-1964); St. Albert’s Seminary in Middletown, NY (1964-1965 & 1967-1976); and Pottsville, PA (1965-1967). Fr. John also served as Retreat Director in Williamstown, MA from 1976-1982; Parochial Vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn, NY from 1982-1994 and as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of the Scapular/St. Stephen’s on 29th Street, New York City from 1994 – 2004. Following his retirement in 2005, Fr. John moved to St. Albert’s Priory in Middletown, New York.
A dedicated and hard-working Carmelite, Father John (Nicholas) Canning, O.Carm. was a professed member of the Carmelite Order for 59 years and a priest for 54 years. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be at the St. Albert’s Chapel at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Carmelite Drive in Middletown, New York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middletown, New York on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O. Carm., Prior Provincial of the Carmelite Province of Saint Elias will officiate.
Interment will be in the Carmelite Cemetery on Carmelite Drive in Middletown, New York.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Father John Canning's memory may be made to the Carmelite Education Fund, and mailed to: P.O. Box 868, Carmelite Drive, Middletown, New York 10940.
