Reverend Alfred Isacsson, O.Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias, died September 6, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 79 years old.

Father Alfred was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 30, 1932 to Raymond and Mae (Breslin) Isacsson. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Raymond and his sister Rosemary (Sister Mary Joel, RDC). He is survived by his brother Paul Isacsson and many nieces and nephews.

Father Alfred received his habit in the Order of Carmelites, North American Province of Saint Elias in September 1951, when he entered the Carmelite Novitiate in Auburn, NY. At the conclusion of his Novitiate year he professed Simple Vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity on September 8, 1952. He professed his Solemn Vows on September 10, 1955 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1958 in Middletown, New York.

He earned a B.A. in Philosophy & English in 1955 and graduated with a Masters Degree in History in 1958 from St. Bonaventure in Olean, NY.

Father Alfred was a High School teacher and served as Prior of Saint Simon Stock Priory from 1964-1967. From 1967-1976 Father Alfred was a teacher and eventually Principal of St. Albert’s Seminary in Middletown, NY and served as Prior of St. Albert’s Priory. He was Vocation Director at the Provincial House in Maspeth, NY from 1976-1982 and also at St. Thomas Aquinas in Brooklyn, NY from 1982-1983. Father Alfred also taught at Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton, FL and was Supervising Principal from 1988-1991. He served as Parochial Vicar (1991-1992) and Pastor (1992-2002) at Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown, NY.

He was the Editor of “The Scapular” from 1959-1964 and has several published articles, papers and books about the Carmelites and historical figures to his credit. Father Alfred served as Provincial Archivist from 1979 until his death. He was also a member of The Lincoln Group.

After his retirement in 2002 Father Alfred moved to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory in Middletown, NY.

A dedicated and hard-working Carmelite, Father Alfred Isacsson, O.Carm. was a professed member of the Carmelite Order for 59 years and a priest for 53 years. He was dearly loved and cherished by all and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held at Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 2 pm - 5:00 pm and 7 to 9:00 pm at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 70 Carmelite Drive, Middletown, New York. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at 8:00pm A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Burial will follow in Carmelite Cemetery, Carmelite Drive

Middletown, New York 10940.
