Middletown, NY

Reverend Patrick John McGuigan, O.Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias, died suddenly on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, NY. He was 64 years old.

Father Patrick was born in Harrison, NJ on September 3, 1949 to Patrick John and Margaret (Hoffman) McGuigan. He is survived by his mother, Margaret McGuigan and two sisters, Maureen (Joseph) Myers and Margaret "Midge" (James) Guckian, as well as several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his father, P. John McGuigan.

Father Patrick received his habit in the Order of Carmelites, North American Province of St. Elias in June 1974 when he entered the Carmelite Novitiate in Williamstown, MA. At the conclusion of his Novitiate year he professed First Vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity on October 24, 1975. He professed his Solemn Vows on October 28, 1978 in Washington, DC. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 23, 1979 in Middletown, NY by Bishop John J. Snyder, D.D.He graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland.After his ordination, Father Patrick served from 1980-1983 as Associate Pastor at Saint Simon Stock Parish in Bronx, NY and from 1983 to 1988 he served as Pastor and Prior as well as the School Director. From 1988-1991 he was a member of the Retreat Staff at Mount Carmel Christian Life Center in Williamstown, MA. He served as Parochial Vicar of our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Bloomingburg, NY from 1991 to 1999. He then served as Parochial Vicar of St. Paul's R.C. Church in Bullville, NY from 1999 to 2012.

In 2013 Father Patrick was assigned as Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Middletown.Father Patrick was the longest serving Procurator for the Province of St. Elias (2000 to present). He also served as Assistant Provincial from 2003 to 2006 and was elected First Councilor from 2006 to 2009.In addition, Father Patrick was Vocation Director of the Order of Carmelites from 1991 to 1992 and served on several commissions in the St. Elias Province, including the Formation Commission, Finance Commission, Spirituality and Justice Commission and the Ministry Commission.

A dedicated, joyful and hard-working Carmelite who loved music and people, Father Patrick McGuigan, O.Carm. was a professed member of the Carmelite Order for 38 years and a priest for 34 years. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 8th, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., with Evening Prayer at 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 9th, at 11 a.m. also at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be at Carmelite Cemetery, Middletown, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Father Patrick McGuigan, O.Carm.'s memory may be made to either the Carmelite Education Fund, P.O. Box 868, Carmelite Drive, Middletown, NY 10940 or to the American Heart Association, 419 East Main Street #309, Middletown, NY 10940.Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
