Obituary for Primitiva Colon

Primitiva (Tila) Colon

June 9, 1934-February 4th, 2023

Tila was born on June 9, 1934, in Jayuya, Puerto Rico to Jose and Paula Gonazalez. She passed on 2/4/2023 after a 2-year battle with rectal cancer.

She met Pio Colon in Puerto Rico and they moved to New York City where they married on January 21, 1963. They had four children: Elvia, Jose (Papo), Harry, Lourdes (Lori).

Tila dedicated her life to children. Not only was she a caring mom to her four children, two of them Eliva and Papo were born with Muscular Dystrophy and Tila cared for them until they each succumbed to the disease. She was also a caregiver for many other children- up to ten at a time. She was the neighborhood babysitter known as mama by all. She was so proud of her children and their accomplishments. She had no greater love than her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her elder life she spent her time caring for and feeding them her delicious home cooked meals.

She was a woman of God with a strong catholic faith. Anytime you would speak with her, she always started and ended with a blessing: “Bendicion”. When she became a senior citizen, she enjoyed going to the senior center, making friends, and enjoying activities. She did this until her health prevented her.

Mama was an avid word find lover; those books kept her going during her illness. Her passion were her plants, she had a “real” green thumb as her plants are beautiful. Mama was an amazing cook; you couldn’t go to her house without her preparing something for you- no one ever went hungry.

She is predeceased by her parents, husband Pio, daughter Elvia, son Jose and son Harry.

She leaves behind her daughter Lori Colon, her grandchildren Joseph (Ashley) Andujar III, Michael (Holly) Andujar, Jessica (Tony) Andujar, DiAngelo Blackford, Jose, Christopher, Iris and Melissa Colon. Her great grandchildren, Remington and Joey Andujar IV.

Visitation will be held on Thursday February 9th, 2023, from 4-7pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home 130 Highland Ave. Middletown NY 10940.
