Obituary for Philip S. Lanos
Philip S. Lanos

July 3, 1940-July 3, 2013

Middletown, NY

Philip Sam Lanos, a longtime Middletown resident, died on his birthday following a short illness at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He was 73 years old.

The son of the late Sam and Mary Lopue Lanos, Phil was born on July 3, 1940 in New York City. He married Dorothy G. Miller on September 4, 1965 in the Bronx. He worked at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. At one point during his tenure there, while the Beatles were staying in NYC, he was mistaken for a member of the group and nearly caused a riot. Dottie and Phil moved to the Middletown area in 1983 with their sons. Phil became a dedicated parishioner at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and worked for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School. He loved Mt. Carmel. He was a talented florist who generously lent his artistic gifts to his church and community whenever it was needed.

Phil was a loving husband and father and doting grandfather whose grandchildren were the light of his life. He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed laughing and liked to sing. Fishing was one of his favorite pasttimes. He liked movies, especially comedies and he and his son Michael shared a love of the Dean Martin show. His favorite foods were seafood, italian food and Michael’s fried chicken.

Phil touched many lives in a special, memorable way. He was fun-loving and always festive-even playing Santa and decorating his entire house for Christmas for his neighborhood years ago.

He was a lifelong avid Yankees fan. After the Yankees lost the World Series to Boston in 2004, Phil wrote a letter to George Steinbrenner insisting they improve their game. Phil was touched when he recived a letter from Mr. Steinbrenner in response.

He is survived by his loving family; his wife Dottie, at home; sons, Michael and his wife Jessica and Philip and his wife Tabitha all of Middletown; two sisters Joan Mack and Rosemarie Lanos; and four beloved grandchildren, Kurtis, Shawn, Brett and Athena as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 6 pm on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope, NY.
