Obituary for Philip Mahaney
PHILIP MAHANEY
February 19, 1941 - July 29, 2017
Town of Deerpark, NY
Philip Mahaney, a retired New York City firefighter and 12-year resident of the area, died at Orange Regional Medical Center with his family at his side.
The son of the late James and Rose (nee Rawdon) Mahaney, he and his twin brother, Patrick, were born on February 19, 1941, and lived in the famed Little Italy section of New York City with their two older siblings. Phil proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965 during the Vietnam War and married his sweetheart, Marybeth Caffrey in April of 1967 at St. Clare’s Church on Staten Island. After their marriage they lived in Brooklyn, NY where they had their three children. In 1974 the Mahaney Family settled in the Annadale section of Staten Island, NY where Philip was an active member of the school and parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church.
He joined the F.D.N.Y. during one of the Departments busiest periods, and during his tenure he was recognized for his bravery on multiple occasions including receiving the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Medal for rescuing several people from a burning structure while off-duty. He also received an ASPCA award for rescuing a canine from a house fire. During his 28 year career with the F.D.N.Y. he worked at Engine 290-Ladder 103 in Brooklyn and Ladder 77 in Staten Island. In 1984 he was selected to be a founding member of the reorganized Rescue 5 on Staten Island, one the five elite F.D.N.Y. rescue units in New York City.
He was the “Go-To Guy” if you needed anything fixed or advice. His family was his priority and his trips to Ireland and Florida created many wonderful experiences and memories that he cherished. He was a man with a profound sense of humor - even through his illness. He was a courageous and dedicated family man.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marybeth, at home; his devoted daughter, Rosemarie Mahaney of Port Jervis; his sons, Philip J. (Barbara) of Sparrowbush, James J. (Jennifer) of Staten Island and brothers: Patrick (Josephine) of Staten Island, and James (Lillian) of Brooklyn; his sister, Catherine Durso of Delray Beach, FL and his eight beautiful grandchildren: Brianna, Meghan, Mary-Kate, Kathleen, Philip, Joseph, Michael and Thomas and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, August 6 at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11a.m. on Monday, August 7th at St. James Church, River Road, Montague, NJ with Fr. Wayne Varga officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Philip's memory to: FDNY Family Transport Foundation, P.O. Box 340949, Brooklyn, NY 11234.
