Obituary for Peter E. Baggatta, Sr.
Peter E. Baggatta Sr. of Middletown, a loving family man and lifelong resident of the area, passed away peacefully at the age of 81, with family members by his side on September 24th, 2021. The son of the late Peter Baggatta and Margaret Newhall Baggatta, he was born on November 1st, 1939 in Albany, New York.
Pete was married to his high school sweetheart, Doreen Cosco, for 58 wonderful years. Upon graduating from Middletown High School in 1959, he enlisted in the U.S Navy to serve his country. He proudly served in the Middletown Police Department for 22 years. Pete was also a 55-year member of the Middletown Elks Lodge 1097. After retirement, he traveled the country with his wife and lifetime friends – Margaret and Don, Bobbi and Jan, and Tre - creating timeless memories.
Vivid memories of Pete include fishing with his family, watching the former Oakland Raiders, indulging in delicious Italian pastries and relaxing to the sounds of Elvis Presley. A humble man with so much to be proud of in life, what made him the proudest was his family and the time spent together, whether it be at the pool or on the yearly family vacations.
Survivors include his loving wife, Doreen Baggatta and sons, Peter E. Baggatta Jr. and wife, Valerie of Middletown, NY and Gerald A. Baggatta and wife Leslie of Middletown, NY; his granddaughters, Erica A. Carey and husband John Carey and Samantha T. Baggatta; and his nephews, Chris and Kyle Tomak. He also leaves behind his great-grandson, Jacob W. Carey.
Pete is predeceased by his sisters, Barbra Tomak and Margaret ‘Smiley’ Johnson.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 29th, 2021 from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Funeral Mass will take place at 11am on Thursday, September 30th, 2021, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown. Graveside services will be held on Thursday September 30th, 2021 following mass in St. Joseph Cemetery located on Cottage Street, Middletown, NY.
In remembrance of Pete’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
