Obituary for Patricia Hanrahan O'Dwyer
PATRICIA HANRAHAN O'DWYER
May 18, 2018
Goshen, NY
Patricia Hanrahan O’Dwyer, Esq., 77, of Goshen, NY, passed peacefully Friday evening, May 18th, 2018. Born in Queens, NY, Patricia was the daughter of the late Edmond M. Hanrahan Esq., and Ethel Hanrahan.
She was the beloved wife of the late Paul O’Dwyer, Esq., a renowned civil rights attorney and public servant.
Pat was well accomplished, a trailblazer, who touched many lives. She leaves this world a much better place than when she entered it. Pat will mostly be remembered by her infectious smile, spirit, determination, kind heart, caring, generosity and friendship.
Pat will be greatly missed by her family and friends and is survived by her step children: William, Eileen, Rory and Brian; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a multitude of loving friends.
Pat was a committed public servant who devoted her life to helping others through her career, volunteer work, as well as mentoring those she served with and those who would follow in her path. Her impact will be carried on and felt in our local communies and across international waters for years to come.
Pat held numerous positions including Town Supervisor of Goshen, a democratic candidate for the New York State Assembly, as well as Orange County Executive. She served as President for the NYS Federation of Democratic Women and Orange County Democratic Women. Professionally Pat, served with Queens Borough President, Donald Manes; she was the Equal Opportunities Officer for Federal Housing Projects at Biltman Construction and Development Corp; she worked in Governor Mario Cuomo’s administrations including traveling the state meeting with African American, Hispanic and Women’s groups to discuss local issues of discrimination, poverty, unemployment, housing, education and how the state could elevate disparities. Pat served under Queens District Attorney Charles Haynes in the Domestic Violence Bureau.
Most recently Pat could be heard weekly discussing the important issues of the day on WTBQ. She was determined to share knowledge of experts sprinkled with her opinion for the residents of the Hudson Valley.
Pat was a member of or advisor to many boards throughout the county and state, including: the Orange Environment; Middletown and Newburgh NAACP; Stop Child Abuse Rage; Landlords and Tenants group of the City of Newburgh; Mayor Kennedy Community Action Team; National conference for Community and Justice; Walk the Walk; Orange County Land Trust; Orange County Safe Homes; and the Orange County League of Women Voters.
Pat’s fervent desire for giving a voice to the voiceless reached beyond our county, state and country’s boarders. Pat was known to accompany state and federal dignitaries on foreign diplomatic trips to Ireland.
Both Pat and Paul were passionate about, and traveled to Ireland often, visiting the O’Dwyer Cheshire Home at Lismirrane. Cheshire Home is a facility for disabled persons which Paul founded on the site of his family home in Bohola, County Mayo. Another shared passion was the O’Dwyer Forestry Foundation, which was dedicated to planting 650 acres of trees throughout the five counties of Connaught. Pat was immersed with the family Foundation supporting these initiatives.
Pat’s passing leaves a void that requires each of us to examine our ourselves and our commitment to our communities and the betterment of all and like Pat, leave this world a better place than we found it.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 31 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Remembrance will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Middletown, New York on June 1 at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mayo Foundation for the Handicapped, c/o O’Dwyer & Bernstein, 52 Duane St., NY, NY 10007 in support of the O’Dwyer Cheshire Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., Middletown, NY. www.app
