Nydia Gray Tally, a resident of the area since 1949, died at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 23, 2014, a day after celebrating her 104th birthday.
The daughter of the late Thomas Anthony and Hannah Spence Gray, she was born on June 22, 1910 on the island of Jamaica in the West Indies. Nydia came to the United States as a young girl and married Martin Tally on June 3, 1937 in New York City. Martin predeceased her in 1972. Nydia was a woman of strong faith and conviction who described herself as “A follower of Jesus”.
She is survived by her children; Junotte Odom of Middletown and Roland Tally and his wife Nancy of Chicago, IL ; her brother, Luther Gray of Richmond, VA; one sister, Ruby E. Gray of Takoma Park, MD; grandchildren, Gabrielle, Nathaniel and his wife Kristy of Seattle, WA, Jonathan and Vivian of Chicago, Il, Elizabeth and her husband Joshua of Panama City, FL and Rebecca of Chicago, IL, and 7 great-grandchildren; David Anthony, Jalaja Nevaeh, Isaiah, Aaliyah Jaylese, Shaylan Grace, Mikayla Elizabeth and Anilee, plus two nieces and one nephew.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Nydia was predeceased by a sister, Beryl Gray Austin and one niece Barbara Constance Gray .
There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 35 East Main Street, Middletown, N.Y. 10940. Rev. Jerry Bricker, Skip Beckham and John Ackerman will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nydia’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice, or for Microphones for the First Congregational Church Choir or Logos of Hope of Operation Mobilization, P. O. Box 444, Tyrone, GA 30290.-0444.
