Nancy Comfort Wood, a lifetime area resident, died following a long illness at Northern Manor in Nanuet, NY. She was 71.

One of Milton Comfort and the late Evelyn Purchell Comfort’s five children, Nancy was born on May 9, 1943 in Middletown. She was raised on her family’s farm in Scotchtown and married Donat L. Wood on June 7, 1964 at St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown.

Nancy was a great communicator which was evidenced in all aspects of her life. She had an incredible eye and persuasive nature that supported her talents as a photographer. She and her husband Don ran Wood Studio from 1967-2001. During that time, she was able to work from home to be there for her growing family. She was a former president of the Hudson Valley Professional Photographers Assoc.

She decided in 1990 to go back to school to become a teacher. Nancy graduated from SUNY Orange in 1992, and began substitute teaching for the Pine Bush School District. She then continued her studies at SUNY New Paltz and received her bachelor’s degree in 1994. She taught for Liberty Central Schools as a 7th grade Social Studies teacher from 1996 until the onset of her illness.

Nancy brought her joy for life to everything she touched. Her illness silenced her voice for some time, but her enduring spirit always remained. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who made an impact on those around her.

In addition to her devoted husband of 50 years, Don at home; she is survived by her four sons, Frank A. Wood and his wife Janet of Knightdale, NC, Brian E. Wood and his wife Susan of Cobbleskill, NY, Matthew J. Wood and his wife Patricia of Montgomery, NY and Andrew Wood and his wife Amy of Norman, OK; sisters, Susan Merrill of Middletown and Kathy Hamilton and her husband Bud of Hudson, Fl; ten beloved grandchildren, Lisa, Victoria and her husband Nate, Robert, Jenna, Adam, Zachary, Rebecca, Josh, Natalie and Jacob, great-grandchildren, Desiree and Sarah as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn, brother Daniel and sister Cynthia.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 2800 Rt. 17K, Bullville, NY 10915. Burial will follow in the family plot in Scotchtown Cemetery, Blumel Road, Middletown, NY 10941.
