Myrna Sheppard Carey of Middletown, died on Tuesday September 28 at Campbell Hall Health Care Center. She was 82.

The daughter of the late Beatrice May McCann and Ernest Davis Brown, she was born July 8, 1928 in Middletown. She was a graduate of Middletown High School and on February 14, 1954, she married Grover L. Carey in Middletown. Myrna worked as a banker for First Federal Savings for 31 years and was a very active member of her community throughout her lifetime. She was a 25 + year and registered scouter for both the Delaware Council and Hudson Valley Council; a member of policy council of Western Orange County Headstart; and sang with the Warwick Corale. Myrna was also a vital part of her church community at North Congregational United Church of Christ in Middletown. She served on the Church Board as Church Clerk, Treasurer for 23 years and financial secretary. She was a member and past president of the Women's Fellowship at North Congregational, served on the Diaconate, sang in the choir, was a member of the Cancel Choir and Music Committee and worked in the Church Thrift Shop. Myrna was also politically active and served for many years as an election inspector for General and School Elections. Since 1982, she was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter #163. Myrna was Past Matron and Secretary of the Queen Esther Chapter and also served as District Deputy Grand Matron for Orange and Rockland Districts in 2003 and 2008. She also was an active member of the Board at Ridgebury Cemetery in Slate Hill for over 30 years. She will be remembered by her family, friends and community for her enormous strength, dedication and loyalty. Myrna was a very special woman whose endless energy and hard work helped make things happen for others.

She is survived by her beloved son, Stephen Lamont Carey and his wife Chae of New Windsor and cherished grandson, Do Yung Carey. She was predeceased by her husband Grover in 1980, one son, Robert Davis Carey in 1970, one grandson, Gungo Carey in 1990 and a brother, Roger Davis Brown in 2002.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Friday, October 1, 2010 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. At 7 pm on Friday evening, the Queen Esther Chapter of OES #163 will conduct a Funeral Service at the funeral home. On Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 10 am, a Funeral Service of Remembrance will be conducted at Myrna's church, North Congregation United Church of Christ, 157 Linden Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in Ridgebury Cemetery, Ridgebury Road, Slate Hill, NY 10973.

Memorial contributions in Myrna's name may be made to any of the charities; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (cff.org), Parkinson's Foundation or the Organ Fund at North Congregational Church, 157 Linden Ave., Middletown, NY 10940.
