Mildred “Millie” Guattery, RN, FOPN of Middletown, died on Sunday April 4 at Middletown Park Manor Middletown, NY. She was 81.
The daughter of the late Vito and Nina Ingilivitch Vilardi, she was born on October 23, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated form Newport High School in Rhode Island and the School of Nursing at Flower 5th Avenue New York Medical College. Millie married Peter Guattery on August 9, 1952 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Middletown.
She was a dedicated registered nurse who focused her career on the elderly; she worked for many years as supervisor for Earl's Nursing Home and later for Middletown Park Manor. She was an avid advocate for the elderly. She firmly believed in, and fought to maintain the right of the elderly to have a full, dignified and complete life, regardless of age or illness.
She was a lifetime member of the Liberty Street P.T.A. and the Middletown Monday Night Women's Classic Bowling League. She enjoyed gardening and had a special love for cactuses and roses. Although she never played golf herself, she was a great fan of the game. She and her husband Pete loved to travel together to Cape Cod whenever they could sneak away.
She is survived by her five children, Justine Brown and her husband Stephen, and sons, Peter and his wife Vivian, John, Christopher and his wife Debby and Andrew and his wife Karen; eight grandchildren, Lindsey
Veety, Christian Brown, Christine, Melissa, Benjamin, Nina, Meghan and Angela Guattery; great-granddaughter, Hannah Veety; brother John Vilardi; sister Rosemary and her grandson Christopher and many nieces and nephews.
Millie was predeceased by her husband Peter in 1998 and one brother Theodore Vilardi.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Funeral Service will be held at 7 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Cremation will be private and burial of ashes will take place at a later date in the family plot in Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Millie's name may be made to Middletown Park Manor Rehab Resident Council, 121 Dunning Road, Middletown, NY 10940.
