Obituary for Michael J Meere, Sr.
MICHAEL J. MEERE SR.
August 25, 1936 – June 17, 2022
Michael J. Meere Sr. (“Mike”), passed away suddenly in his home surrounded by his family at the age of 85 on June 17, 2022. He was a long-time resident of Middletown, NY and previous resident of New Rochelle, NY.
Michael was born in Crovraghan, Kildysart, County Clare, Ireland to the late John and Mary Meere and was the eldest of 10 children. In 1958, he sailed to America to make a new life for himself and soon met his beloved wife, Belinda Meere (nee Burke) who have been married for 62 years. Michael was employed by NYC Mason Tenders Union for a decade. He was also worked at Holy Family Church for over 25 years as Lead Engineer in New Rochelle, NY until his retirement in late 2001, before relocating to Orange County. Mike was a long-term member of the New Rochelle Irish Benevolent Society. Many fond memories were made with family and friends at benevolent dances, fundraisers, the Catskills and several trips “home” to Ireland with his family. He was an avid history buff and huge Giants fan! If there was any word to define Mike it was his altruistic nature to help anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife, Belinda, his son Michael (Carolyn), and ‘caregiving’ daughter Maureen, as well as four grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Carroll, Melissa (Christopher) Prendys, Shannon (Jeff) Park and Michael Jr. (Jessica) Meere; and four great grandchildren, Adeline, Madison, Amelia and Lincoln. He is predeceased by his father, John, his mother Mary, his baby sister, Breda, and brothers, Christy, Thomas, Jack and Raymond. He is survived by his sisters, Mary, Elizabeth (“Betty”) and Sheila and brother, William.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Middletown, NY.
The funeral service will be held at 9:45 AM on Thursday, June 23, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY. The funeral livestream will be available on this website at 9:45 am. The burial to follow at St. Stephens Cemetery in Warwick, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to COPD FOUNDATION and/or The American Kidney Foundation.
