Michael Dennis Smith, a lifetime area resident, died following a short illness on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 59. The son of Thomas P. and Louise Adair Smith, he was born on July 27, 1952 in Long Branch, NJ.
He attended St. Joseph's School in Middletown and Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey. Michael married Ellen Thornton on June 4, 1977 in Goshen. He worked in Bakery Sales for many years for Stroehmann's Bakeries in Goshen.
Mike was devoted to his family in every way. He enjoyed classic cars; collecting them, driving them and working on them. He also liked hunting and was a member of the Oak Ridge Rod and Gun Club in Otisville.
In addition to his parents of Middletown and his loving wife, Ellen at home; he is survived by his three children, Cory and his fiance, Cindy Chan of Queens, Erin Smith of White Plains and Colin Smith of New Hampton; six sisters, Shannon Brock and her husband, Robert, April Smith, Kerry Campbell and her husband, Wes, Candy Smith, Penny Jehlen and Colleen Gibbons and her husband, Michael; nieces and nephews, Tom and Matt Brock, Taira and Ryon Campbell, Michael Jr., Jessica and Kacie Gibbons, Alanna and James Vint, Matthew Thornton, Christopher Thornton, Bryan Kearney, Alexander and Shannon Thornton, Julia and Conor Thornton and his lifetime friend, Thomas Schwartz.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown. Cremation will be private.
Memorial contributions in Michael's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 419 East Main Street, Middletown, NY 10940.
Michael’s family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Orange Regional Medical Center for the loving care and help they extended to both Michael and Ellen during his illness and her recent surgery.
