Obituary for Merlyn Greenberg
Merlyn Greenberg
September 17, 1932- May 11, 2014
On May 11, Mother’s Day, we said goodbye to our best friend and the most wonderful mother to ever grace this Earth. The loving and unique life of Merlyn Greenberg began September 17, 1932 on Coney Island, Brooklyn. She was held and protected by George and Renee Garfinkel with her dear sister Harriet and predeceased brother, Neil. Merlyn shared her fruitful life with her loyal and big hearted husband, Alvin Greenberg who passed in the summer of 1998. They gave life to two selfless, passionate, devoted daughters; the benevolent Ilene (Greenberg) Valentin and youngest daughter and caregiver, Robin (Greenberg) Kotkin.
Merlyn worked at Orange County Community College for 22 years as an administrative assistant and developed lifelong friendships with her co-workers. In her early years, Merlyn entertained with her sister in a musical/comedy act, The Garret Sisters.
With her daughters marriages to George Valentin and Larry Kotkin, Merlyn and Alvin’s family grew into an extended family that could only be measured and personified through her relationships with her grandchildren; Steven, Alec, Jessica and Yvette. They will forver carry out her uninhibited humor, her boundless love and endless devotion to her family. She enchanted all of those who crossed her path, to meet her her was to love her.
During her courageous battle, she was tended to by Dr. Rametta, Dr. Dinsmore, and their caring staff. A special thanks to her Hospice staff who cared for her so faithfully and lovingly. She is survived by nieces Donna, Susan and Lisa and proclaimed sons, Michael Cruz, John Wolven and Roy DePaul and their families.
The love for Merlyn, was truly pronounced by the gathering of her closest friends and family where she gave her last words of infinite wisdom, her last punchline, and last breath. She was brave until the end, and truly left us laughing. Merlyn proudly lived for her family and they are honored to carry the memories and morals of such a magnificient person.
