Mary R. Forthoffer of Middletown NY , died on Saturday June 25 at O.R.M.C. Horton Campus Middletown, NY. She was 81.
The daughter of the late John W. and Virginia Moore Rowley, she was born on May 11, 1930 in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Cornell University and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She moved to the Middletown area in 1952, and married Frank R. Forthoffer. Mary was a dedicated member of the United Presbyterian Church and served in several church offices. She was an Elementary teacher at Albert Street School in Middletown from 1967 until her retirement in 1991. She loved teaching and working with children. Mary was very active in her community; she volunteered for Meals on Wheels both in Middletown and in St. Petersburg, FL, was a member of the Middletown Historical Society, and Historical Club of Middletown.
Swimming was her favorite activity, and she even advertised her love for the sport on her bumper sticker, "I'd rather be swimming". She was a member of the Adirondack Masters, and took part in the Senior Olympics as a swimmer. Mary loved to travel and was fortunate to have traveled to Australia, Europe, India and the domestic United States. She was a licensed pilot, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Her courage during her lifetime and recent illness was an inspiration to her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Frank at home ; son Gary and his wife Dawn of Bloomingburg; daughters, Carol Maltias of Middletown, and Gail Forthoffer of Methuen, MA; and her beloved granddaughters, Alison Candace Maltias and Emily Theresa Forthoffer.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Funeral Service will be held at 8 pm on Monday evening at the funeral home. Following cremation, burial will be in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, Midway Road, Middletown.
