Obituary for Mary "Mary" Elizabeth Leek
Mary “May” Leek of Otisville died on Thursday February 23 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus in Middletown, NY. She was 84.
The daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Elizabeth Mary Keough Browne, she was born on November 8, 1921 in Flushing, NY.
Mary married Walter Douglas Leek on June 20, 1942 in Flushing, NY. Doug and May were married for 61 years until Doug’s death on Sept. 10, 2003.
Although they owned a home together here since 1965, May and Doug retired to the area in 1979.
A family statement reads:
“May had a great personality; she was an extremely resourceful person. She was a great knitter, baker and cook and was known to make the best gravy in the world. May was always very stylish and was a talented seamstress who could tailor clothing as well as draperies. She taught her whole family about each holiday, and her lessons will always be remembered and cherished. May posessed a wealth of knowledge and liked to learn her whole life; she had a gift for language and was was able to play with words effectively- she was full of puns. Most importantly, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they are all blessed with beautiful memories of her.”
She worked for Edwards and Hanley, a Stock Brokerage Firm, where she was a registered representative on the New York Stock Exchange.
After her retirement, May volunteered for Meals on Wheels and read for the blind. She also taught CCD and served as a Lecter at Holy Name of Jesus in Otisville and was a member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary.
May is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Romeo of New York City and Eileen Ralley of Verona; her son Douglas and his wife Harriet of Deer Park; three grandchildren, Stephen, Michael and Kyle and three great grandchildren, Michael, Caroline and Zachary Ryan, as well as one brother, Lawrence J. Browne of Ft. Meyers, Fla.
Friends may call on Sunday, February 26, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at Applebee McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 27 at 11 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville. Burial will take place on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 10 am in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
