Obituary for Mary J. Lane
Mary J. Lane
March 23, 1930-March 1, 2018
Middletown, NY
Mary J. Lane, a Middletown resident since 2001 and formerly of New City, NY, died on March 1, 2018 at Middletown Park Manor. She was 87.
The daughter of the late Arthur Augustus and Anna Dorothy Forney Becraft, she was born on March 23, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY.

Mary’s favorite subjects in school were History and Music.
Mary went to Girls Commercial High School (which changed to Prospect Heights High School) in Brooklyn and loved to sing. She met her sweetheart at church and they later sang together in the Dessorf choir in Manhattan.

On September 16, 1950, Mary married Charles G. Lane Jr. at Hanson Place Methodist Church, Brooklyn, NY. Mary and Charles moved to New City, NY and raised three daughters.

Mary is pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Charles, and also by her siblings, Fanny Becraft, Anne (Frank) Chase and John (Mary Vilar) Becraft.

A woman of deep faith, Mary fostered that in all her children. (Speaking of faith-she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at age 8 in Sunday School at Hanson Place Methodist Church and her favorite Bible Verse is John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Mary was a devout member of the United Methodist Church in New City; where she taught Sunday school, sang in the adult church choir, led the children’s choir for a time as well as led a clown ministry.
Mary was a talented vocalist and pianist. She loved listening to beautiful music and raised all of her children in the arts.

She loved reading throughout her lifetime as well as sewing and needle arts, and in her later years, she enjoyed painting. Mary was a talented master gardener who treasured being outdoors; she was a 4-H leader as well as a member of the New City Garden Club. Later in life she went to College.

She always opened her home, kitchen and swimming pool to friends, family and neighbors; and many people called her “Mom” or “Grandma”
After Charles’ death in 1999, Mary lived with her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Ernie Parker and their son Nathaniel Jake from April 2001 to 2014, and joined the St. Paul’s United Methodist church community in Middletown. She sang in the choir, was a member of the Women’s group, and active in all church functions.
When she moved to Middletown Park Manor in 2014, her community spirit continued and she became a member of the Resident Council, and stayed busy with her puzzles, bingo, and family time with games.

Her family will cherish their memories of camping cross country, visiting historic places and family while travelling with her. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who was loved by all.

Mary is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, April (Sam) Morris of Monticello, NY; Nancy (Ernie) Parker of Middletown, NY and Carol (Scott) Van Gorder of Oswego, NY; Grandchildren Leela (Nate) Griesinger of OH, TJ (Harmony) Morris, Amanda Morris, Samantha Morris, Christopher Van Gorder and Nathaniel Parker.
Great-grandchildren Cheyenne, Harlon and Aspen Morris; Sister-in-law Barbara Lane;
Cousins Betty (John) Long of CT, and Roberta Enterline of FL, many beloved nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a great-grandnephew.
