Mary Emily Mayer, retired teacher from Valley Stream School District 13, died comfortably at home after living a full and loving life for 95 years.
She was born in York, Pennsylvania to Esther and Mervin Livingston. She dearly loved this area of the country and the beautiful dairy farms that her family members worked and tended. Her lifelong love of music and talent at the piano led her to attend Westchester State Teacher’s College, where she studied Music Education and met her husband, Charles W. Mayer (3/30/1925-10/24/2013).
They moved to Franklin Square on Long Island, where both taught in District 13. Together they raised four children, Charles, Anna, Kathryn and Laurie. Mom shared her love of music over the years with students, church congregations and her family. In addition to music, Mom loved gardening, birds and animals of all kinds. Her strong sense of family and love is what made our extended family so special.
In addition to her 4 children, Charles D. Mayer and his wife Holly, Anna C. Mayer and her husband David Leibenhaut, Kathryn E. Bates and her husband David and Laurie R. Hulle and her husband Larry, she is survived by 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
For the past 33 years, Mary Emily has resided in the Middletown area and became a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Middletown, NY. As a church member she was an active participant in the choirs and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed volunteering for the food pantry and other church missions. She was an active member of the Mount Hope Seniors and the exercise club associated with this organization.
Mary Emily was loved deeply by her family and will be forever missed.
Donations in Mary Emily’s name can be given to the Furnace Fund at St. Paul’s UMC in Middletown, Hospice of Orange-Sullivan Counties, or to your local animal shelter.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, NY. Burial will take place on Thursday, February 29th 2024 at Pine Lawn Memorial Park
A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Mary Emily's life on Saturday, March 16th at 11AM St Paul's Methodist Church located at 58 West Main Street Middletown, NY
