Mary Elizabeth Small, a longtime Middletown resident and recently of Holiday, FL, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 in Newport Richie, FL. She was 97.
The daughter of the late John L. and Florence Lane Small, she was born on December 14, 1920 in Middletown, NY. Mary graduated from Middletown High School in 1940 and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and received her NYS Nursing license. From 1944 to 1950, she worked for Horton Hosptial in Middletown, then worked for Dr. Ross OB-GYN until her retirement 31 years later in 1981. She was a lifetime member of the Middletown BPW, the St. Joseph’s Altar Society, Catholic Daughters Court Rosemary #681. She was also an RSVP volunteer and the Happy Seniors and Golden Age Seniors.
Mary maintained a solid gold friendship with her niece, Sharon, and the two were inseparable. Sharon saw the world because of Mary and her love and generosity. Mary will be dearly missed by her entire family.
In addition to her niece Sharon and her husband Albert Vicere of Holiday, FL, she is survived by her nephew Edward Claus and his wife Ann of Bloomingburg as well as many other nieces, nephews and greatnieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to St. Joseph’s Church.
