Obituary for Mary Elizabeth DePuy
Mary (Betty) Elizabeth DePuy, 97 years young, a lifelong resident of Middletown, New York, died peacefully at home on July 28, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born December 13, 1916 to Elizabeth (Allen) and James Finnegan. She was a wonderful mother and wife, and loving grandmother and great-grandmother with a care free attitude which made her fun in all aspects of life.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Harrison (Hap) DePuy; her sisters, Doris Finnegan and Kathryn Osborne and her husband William; her son-in-law, M. Robert McCarey; and sister-in law, Madlyn Bethards. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a member of the Columbiettes. She was a homemaker for most of her life, but who can forget her waiting on you at the Mohegan Grocery and at Tompkins Dry Goods or being greeted by her at the Rag Shop; and how we remember the trips to Florida with her sister Kate!
Betty leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter Patricia A. McCarey of Clear Lake, IA and Ft. Pierce, FL; her son James E. DePuy and his wife Susan of Middletown, NY; her daughter Mary M. DePuy of Middletown, NY; and her son Thomas M. DePuy and his wife Sharon of Circleville, NY; her grandchildren, who referred to her as Grandma, and her great grandchildren who knew her as Grandma Betty or Betty Blue, Robert J. McCarey and his wife Julie and their children Katelyn and Harrison of Newton, IA; Brian P. McCarey and his wife Katherine and their children Andrew, Erin, Austin and Meghan of Byron, IL; Christopher A. DePuy and his former wife Catherine and their children Catherine, Rohan and Finnegan of Portola Valley, CA; Elizabeth A. Boyle and her husband Matthew and their children Luca and Wyatt of Goshen, NY; Gregory J. DePuy and his wife Catherine and their children Collins and Dempsey of Johnson, NY; Jonathan P. DePuy and his wife Rachel and their children Adeline and Maple of Hotchkiss, CO; Kevin M. DePuy and his wife Allison and their children Elizabeth and Clara of Missoula, MT; Sandra M. Friel and her husband Peter of Hillsdale, NJ and his children Laura and Ryan; her furry “grandchild” Ben; and her recent Sunday dinner partner, Gabrielle.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law Josiah Bethards of Laurel, DE and her cousin Marion Conklin of Middletown, NY; nieces and nephews Cathy Taylor of MI, Robert Bethards of PA, and memories of Thursday nights on Winchester Avenue with Patrick Osborne of NY, James Osborne of PA, Daniel Osborne of PA, Kathryn Osborne of FL, Lawrence Osborne of FL, Ann Walters of FL, Suzann Sanchez of NY, Christopher Osborne of NC, Eileen Osborne of NY, Elizabeth Torres of NY and Mark Osborne of NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the M. Robert McCarey Memorial Scholarship - c/o DePuy, 549 Route 17M, Middletown, New York 10940.
Visitation will be held on Friday August 1st from 4-8 pm at the Applebee-McPhillips FH, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s RC Church, 149 Cottage St. Middletown NY at 11am Saturday August 2nd, with Fr. Michael Cedro officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Middletown.
