Maria G. DeFilippis
Maria Giovanna DeFilippis, a longtime resident and local businesswoman died after a lengthy illness at home on June 21st surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
The daughter of Francesco and Caterina Ruggiero, she was born in San Valentino, Italy on February 29, 1936.
On October 15, 1964, Maria married the love of her life, Vincenzo DeFilippis, and together they immigrated to America, settling in Brooklyn. Maria was a seamstress in Manhattan and was always able to create beautiful garments for herself, her family, and friends. In 1971 they moved to Middletown, following her sister Contina Siena, and ventured into building a multigenerational bakery business, DeFilippis Bakery. Hard work, long hours, and perseverance brought them a great reputation. Maria and Vincenzo were a great asset to our community and left a permanent legacy behind.
She is survived by her devoted husband Vincenzo of 59 years, her children; Carmela Foglia and Giulio of Middletown, and grandchildren; Felice, Vincenzo, Taneisha, Vincenzo G., Giulio, Gia, and Giovanna, and four great-grandchildren; and one sister Grazia DiPalma and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 3-7 PM with a service at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, June 26, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s R.C. with Fr. Dennis Nikolic officiating. Entombment will take place in the family mausoleum.
The family request that all flowers be sent to the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
