Lyle L. Hughes
March 28, 1931 – February 20, 2023
New Hampton, New York
Lyle went home to be with his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ on February 20, 2023.
He was born on March 28, 1931 in Bath, NY to Henry and Minnie Hughes.
Lyle graduated from high school in 1948 while attending a one room school house located on the family
farm in Howard, NY. He continued his education earning his Certified Life Underwriters (CLU) degree
from the American College of Insurance in 1968.
Lyle served in the Army 1954-1956: 11th Airborne, Fort Campbell, KY and 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, NC.
He completed 87 jumps while also training others.
Lyle started his insurance career with the Farm Family Insurance Company as an agent selling life insurance.
He later served as District Manager for Eastern NY, Director of Training and as vice-president.
He eventually left Farm Family and started his own agency in 1975 writing for several property and casualty
insurance carriers. Lyle served the insurance industry over his life-time in many capacities including President of the Orange County and NYS Life Underwriters Associations. He served on the board of the NYS Insurance Department, Guilderland Reinsurance Company and the Mid-Hudson Co. Operative Insurance Company for twenty-seven years and sixteen years as president, retiring in 2006.
Lyle found great joy in serving, helping and talking to others. If he could fix it, build it, or organize it, you would find Lyle getting his hands dirty. This passion showed through greatest while serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, alongside his wife, Mona, in the ministry of The Gideons International. He served 43 years witnessing and placing Bibles in the “highways and byways of life” including a trip to the Philippines in June 2004.
Lyle is predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Mona M. Hughes. Together they had five children:
Douglas (Jane) Hughes, Darla (David) Diehl, Dale (Beverly) Hughes, Dawn Barry and predeceased by his
son, Darryn. He is survived by two sisters: Isabelle Fenner and Betty Purdy; nine grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
A special thank you goes to Pastor Mason Whitley, the Church at Ridgebury fellowship and our many friends and family for their prayers and support during this difficult time in our lives.
